Agricultural Co-operatives
An agricultural co-operative is an association of primary
producers who have come together to achieve common commercial objectives
more successfully than they could as individual businesses.
These objectives all relate
fundamentally to the continuance and improved profitability of members' farm
enterprises.
The most common form of agricultural co-operative in Australia is the
marketing
co-operative.
A marketing co-operative is an enterprise owned by primary producers to assist
them produce
and process products to market specification, thereby maximising the
value of their produce as it moves down the supply chain to the
consumer.
Marketing co-operatives cover functions beyond the farm gate such
as transport,
grading, packing, storage, processing, wholesaling, distribution and
exporting.
Input supply co-operatives
are the second most common form of agricultural
co-operative in Australia. Co-operatives are used by primary producers to
purchase petroleum
products, seed,
fertiliser, agricultural chemicals, stock feed, hardware and farm supplies.
A co-operative growing in popularity is the
agricultural services co-operative.
This type of co-operative is formed to provide a specific service not currently
available from other businesses or government, or where there is limited
choices available to the producer.
