CO-OPS by STATE

The Australian co-operative sector is part of an international co-operative movement led by the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA).

The ICA is a non-government organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, and has 248 member organisations representing nearly one billion people in 92 countries.

ICA was founded in 1895 to unite, represent and serve co-operatives worldwide. Its members are national and international co-operative organisations in all sectors of activity including agriculture, banking, business services, insurance, fisheries, housing, tourism and consumer co-operatives.

In 1946, the ICA was one of the first non-government organisations to be accorded United Nations Consultative Status. Today it is one of over 40 organisations holding Category 1 Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council.

In 2010, the UN declared 2012 the International Year of Co-operatives. This is in recognition of the critical role co-operatives play in the economic and social lives of many communities and nations.

Co-operative enterprise now accounts for over 100 million jobs around the world and financial co-operatives serve an estimated 857 million people, or 13 percent of the world's population. In some countries, like Japan and Finland, co-op membership represents more than 1 in 3 households.
